Background

Something to prove

  • He is NOT a failure.
  • Violence CAN be used as a force for good (no matter what his father may say to contrary).
  • Joining The Military was the RIGHT decision.

Family related guilt

  • Left family for the academy.
  • Not around to support family.
  • Mother died while out of contact on an extended, deep-space training mission.
  • Somewhat estranged from his father.
  • Second son named as family heir.
  • Brother is still really friendly and wants Dmitri to come home and join in father's work.

Father

  • Strict but fair.
  • Infuriating patient.
  • Diplomat / peace envoy / pacifist.

Rival

  • A piloting training exercise through an asteroid field.
  • There was no time-limit, but 5 minutes after starting someone suggested it should be a race...
  • Another pilot made a blunder which nearly collided him with 100 tones of cold rock.
  • In a panic he over-corrected and in the process dislodged a large lump directly into the side of Dmitri's craft.
  • Dmitri survived, but with permanent scaring and the loss of one eye.
  • The pilot responsible was ${mark's character}.
